Called pianist of pianists, whose interpretations combine subtle beauty and emotional fire (The Times of London). Renowned for his solo recitals, chamber concerts and concert collaborations with orchestras around the world, the Armenian-American pianist is also one of the most distinguished contemporary teachers and an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist with a magnificent discography. Praised in concert for his excellent technique, Babayan has worked with such respected conductors as Thomas Dausgaard, Valery Gergiev, Neeme Järvi, Sir Antonio Pappano, Rafael Payare, David Robertson, Dima Slobodeniouk, Tugan Sokhiev, Gábor Takács-Nagy, Yuri Temirkanov, Xian Zhang and Nikolaj Znaider, and with some of the world’s finest orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra.
Sergei Babayan was born into a family of musicians in Armenia during the Soviet occupation. After receiving his first piano lessons from Luisa Markaryan and Georgy Saradyev, a leading representative of the St. Petersburg school and a former student of the legendary Vladimir Sofronitsky, he continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Lev Naumov, Vera Gornostayeva and Mikhail Pletnev. In 1989, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Babayan came to the United States, where he attracted the attention of the world, winning first prizes at the Cleveland, Robert Casadesus, Palm Beach, Hamamatsu and Scottish International Piano Competitions. He currently lives in New York, an American citizen.

He was born in Krosno. He graduated from the Academy of Music in Krakow in 1985 in the conducting class of prof. Jerzy Katlewicz. He improved his skills during conducting courses with Peter Eötvös. In 1986-1987 he was also a scholarship holder of the Bachakademie Stuttgart, participating in master classes of prof. Helmuth Rilling.
From 1988 to 1991 he was a conductor and artistic director of the Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk. In 1990 he made his debut at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. In 1995-1997 he was the artistic director of the Arthur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź. From 2005 to 2009 he was the conductor of the Grand Theatre of the National Opera in Warsaw. In the 2005/2006 season he prepared the premiere of Spartacus by Khachaturian and conducted performances of Onegin by Tchaikovsky, La Traviata by Verdi, and La Boheme by Puccini. In the 2006/2007 season he conducted the premiere of the ballet Onegin choreographed by John Cranko. In 2008-2012 he was the General and Artistic Director of the Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Kraków.
He has also made archival recordings for Polish Radio and Television, and CDs for DUX, Aurophon and Point Classics. His recording of Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. 1960 was singled out by the American music magazine La folia (alongside such creations as Beethoven's Symphony No. XNUMX conducted by Carlos Kleiber and Sviatoslav Richter's Appasionata XNUMX) as an example of rare intensity and commitment in music.
Since 2008, Paweł Przytocki has been associated with the Department of Conducting of the Academy of Music in Krakow, where he teaches his conducting class. In September 2017, he took up the position of artistic director of the Łódź Philharmonic. Artur Rubinstein in Łódź.
